The Engineers recruited by UPSC through Engineering Services Examination (ESE) play very important role in Nation building. The role and responsibility of engineers recruited through Engineering Services Examination depends on the department allotted to the candidates on the basis of their final merit and choice exercised. The responsibility of engineers in various departments of Government of India varies over a wide range right from policy formulation to implementation. Engineers are responsible for creation of infrastructure in different departments of Government of India such as Defence, Railways, CPWD, Roads etc. They are eligible for going on deputation to other department of Government of India, Public Sector Units and State Governments.
Most of the Engineers recruited through ESE are class 1 Gazetted officers of Government of India. An engineer recruited through ESE can reach up to the rank of Principle Secretary to the Government of India depending upon his age profile at the time of entry in to the service. However, most of the engineers reach up to the level of Chief Engineer in various departments. A direct recruited class 1 office is placed at level 12 in 7th Central Pay Commission with gross pay of Rs. 56100/- at beginning of his career. They are eligible for house accommodation or house rent allowances and other perks as per entitlement. The pension benefits given to Central Government officers are currently as per new pension scheme which is a contributory pension scheme. The other facilities availed by Engineers depend upon the department of Government of India in which they serve.
