Engineering Services Examination (ESE) is most sought after examination by graduate engineers in India who wish to joint central government as engineers. This examination is popularly known as Indian Engineering Services (IES) examination. Engineering Services Examination is conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) once in a year. It has three stages of selection process called Stage I : ESE Preliminary, Stage II : ESE Mains and Stage III: Personality Test. The preliminary examination is a qualifying examination. Only those students who qualify preliminary examination stage can appear in ESE mains examination. However, the marks obtained in the preliminary examination are counted in final merit of the candidates. The basic qualification for appearing in ESE is engineering graduation; however, the candidate can appear with one of the four options of Electrical Engineering, Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering, Mechanical Engineering and Civil Engineering available to candidates. There are many instances when computer science graduate engineers have qualified ESE with electrical or electronics & telecommunication engineering.
